The influence of trolling on teen mental health: Promoting positive body image and self-perception

Modern society is experiencing a digital revolution, especially post-pandemic, smartphones and social media usage have become ubiquitous among teenagers. In this era, bullying takes the form of online trolling, which impacts the mental health of teenagers multifacetedly and profoundly. Trolling is an online act of intentionally provoking or antagonizing users to elicit particularly desirable or negative responses. Increased incidences of trolling are facilitated by giving anonymity on social media platforms and also become a form of attention-seeking behavior, amusement, revenge, and dealing with boredom among youths by creating and sharing offensive messages or comments, spreading rumors, excluding victims, and harassment. The consequences can lead to anxiety, depression, social isolation, trauma, eating disorders, substance use, conduct issues, body dysmorphia, negative self-perception, low self-esteem, body image issues, or even more tragic outcomes such as self-harm and suicide attempts in vulnerable individuals.
