The incredibly 'charming' West Country seaside town that tourists can't pronounce

Cornwall is one of the most popular UK tourist destinations, with millions of people flocking to the stunning West Country county during the summer months.

Hailed for its beautiful beaches and impressive countryside, Cornwall has it all when it comes to creating the perfect getaway. And a popular spot within the county is Fowey.

The small town boasts a breathtaking harbour that flows into the English Channel, and is surrounded by hills and woodland, reports MyLondon. It also offers charming narrow streets lined with independent shops, galleries, and restaurants.

But tourists heading to the holiday spot often don't know how to pronounce it. As any local would tell you, Fowey is actually pronounced ‘Foy’ as in the word ‘joy’.

People love the town so much that a lot of its houses are now owned by people outside of Cornwall and used as second homes. This influx previously pushed house prices up by more than £100,000 in just one year, according to The Sunday Times.

That’s why in 2020, Fowey residents held a referendum and voted overwhelmingly in favour to ban newly built houses being sold as second homes. Under the new rules, homeowners will now have to prove the property is to be used as their principal residence, and not as a holiday home.

Reviewers on TripAdvisor gave the location top marks. One person said: "Whenever we visit this part of Cornwall we always try to get to visit Fowey. There are plenty of pubs cafes and restaurants to choose from, and a good selection of shops, including some local independents."

Another wrote: "Beautiful place to go and soak up the scenery. There are a few pubs, cafes and bakeries to try and also some great shops to find some unique items with cornish charm."

A third said: "What a delightful place. We parked at the top of the town and walked down. This is quite steep for anyone who may have difficulty walking. The lovely streets with quaint shops enabling you to just meander down to the estuary. But you just have to buy some delicious Cornish pasties too."
