The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird responds to reports of new reboot

The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird has responded to recent reports that a reboot could be on the cards.

The coming-of-age series ran for three series on E4 from 2008 until 2010 and was then followed by two movies.

Last month, cast member Joe Thomas, 40, who played Joe Thomas, has suggested the main stars could be reunited again, adding he would be keen for a reboot.

Now, Bird, 40, who portrayed his school friend Will McKenzie, has given his two cents and it’s not good news.

Speaking to the MailOnline, Bird said: “I’m afraid to be the one pouring cold water on this but it’s not happening. I can tell you emphatically that there are no prospects of a reunion.”

He explained: “[The cast would] be happy to but it’s not up to us, it’s up to the writers, Iain [Morris] and Damon [Beesley, and I know they’re both very busy these days.”

“It’s not more likely to happen now than it was ten years ago I’m afraid,” Bird added.

“I think it was a comedy that inhabited a certain time,” he continued. “So, no, there has been no discussion about a new show or film.”

Bird also admitted that despite fans regularly coming up to him in the street and quoting lines from The Inbetweeners at him, he doesn’t remember his lines from the show.

“I have no idea what they’re talking about,” he said. “I can’t remember the show - I don’t think I’ve even watched it back since I made it in 2008.”

Bird - whose other acting credits include Friday Night Dinner, The Harry Hill Movie and Everyone Else Burns - seemed less than keen on revisiting his Inbetweeners character earlier this year, telling The Radio Times he thought reviving the show would be a “terrible idea”.

He explained: “My instinct is it would be a terrible idea. What was funny about these characters was the stage of life they were at.

“They could get away with some of the terrible things they said and did because they were still essentially children.

“If they got back together now, I’m not sure that would be funny. I think it might just be sort of sad and creepy.”

Despite the show catapulting him to fame, Bird has also said he doesn’t think that The Inbetweeners has aged well and doubted it would have been commissioned today.

Speaking to The Telegraph about how times have changed since it aired, he highlighted the sexism and “casual homophobia” displayed by the characters.

He said: “I rationalise it to myself by saying that at the time it was an accurate representation of the way teenagers talk to each other. Is that still the case now? I assume not.
