The Highest and Lowest Gas Prices By State

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas is now under the $3-mark for the first time in four years. It’s now down to $2.94, according to data gathered from AAA. That’s down from the $3.08 average people paid last month, but the average doesn't reflect the significant price variation across states.

Californians no longer pay the steepest prices in the country, with an average of $4.41. That’s down from $4.68 just a month ago, with Hawaii now having the nation’s most expensive gas. Prices have increased a few cents to $4.45 a gallon.  Washington is the state with the third-highest average price once again, but it’s down nearly 15 cents.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, drivers across the central and southern US also saw their prices dip. Oklahoma continues to have the lowest average gas prices in the nation, at $2.37 per gallon, down nearly 20 cents. Texas and Iowa round out the top three states with the cheapest gas, averaging $2.51 and $2.54, respectively.

The decline in the average price for a gallon of gas coincides with a decline for mid-grade and premium prices, too. US consumers are now paying $3.44 and $3.80 for those fuel types, down by over 10 cents. These trends offer a decent picture for consumers: Gas prices are falling.
