The hidden tunnels and shelters that lie beneath the city of Leeds

A lot of people might not know that there is a whole world hidden beneath the streets of Leeds. As you have been walking around, below you is a complex of tunnels and old buildings once used for other things.

Have you ever wondered why Leeds City Centre has green 'air vents' dotted around? Well, they're actually a part of the Whitehall road service tunnel system located beneath the city. There used to be a lot more of these vents scattered across Leeds including Queen Street and Wellington Street.

And it's not just the service tunnels for workers, there are bomb shelters, old subways and bunkers right beneath your feet. The vents you can see today are for an old underground system and substation network that, according to reports, was quite extensive.
