You always feel ever so slightly smug when you discover somewhere a little off the beaten track and feel like you are treading on virgin ground. And there are some places that, although known to many, don't get the attention more widely regarded places do - or the crowds that follow.
One such hidden gem is Sker in Porthcawl. This sandy, remote stretch of coast is mostly just enjoyed by locals. It’s the most westerly of Porthcawl’s beaches, and you can actually only get there by walking from Rest Bay or Kenfig National Nature Reserve.
There are two car parks at the reserve, and it's a 25 minute walk through the dunes to the beach after you get to Kenfig. It's also classed as rural, and has no toilets or commercial amenities, so you really are amid some true nature.
