The Hebburn mum who took on British Coal over choking fumes and poisonous puddles - and won

Jennie Shearan moved to South Tyneside with her family in 1953, and on the face of things - describing herself as a mum who 'loved every minute' of cooking, sewing and knitting - she would seem an unlikely heroine.

But that's exactly what she became, through her decades of campaign work against the Monkton Lane Coke Works and the pollution of the Hebburn area through fumes of sulphur dioxide.

For more than 50 years, the South Tyneside skies were filled with acrid smoke and smoke from the works, becoming highly irritating for residents of the area.
