The story says the project started in 1945 after World War II ended. At that time, Area 51 was called the Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Camp, as per the Fandom. Dr. Western wanted to make a soldier with special powers. He wanted someone who could heal fast, survive tough conditions, and go a long time without food or water.
