'The greatest' - Manchester United fans rave over Cristiano Ronaldo winning Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester United was celebrated by the fanbase on a global scale. After weeks of thinking he was going to sign for their rivals Manchester City, their famous number seven returned to Old Trafford and most fans couldn't have been happier.

What followed however was completely unexpected, some fans thought that United would be able to challenge for the title after a window that saw them bring in Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. But even those who didn't think that the team was ready to go toe to toe with City and Liverpool didn't expect the club to miss out on Champions League football and crash out of every cup competition.

Despite the team severely underperforming, Ronaldo personally had a very good season. His goals were crucial for United's progression into the knockout stages of the Champions League and his 18 goals in the Premier League were only beaten by Mohammed Salah and Heung Min Son.

He did have a quiet few months when Ralf Rangnick was appointed but with no one else stepping up to take the mantle when he was underperforming, Ronaldo has been clear and away United's best player this season. There are still debates about whether he will be able to keep up his form and fit in under Erik ten Hag but for now, he has had a good individual season.

And the fans agree too, voting Ronaldo their Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2022. This marks the fourth time he has won the award with his first three coming during his first spell with the club and equalling David de Gea's record for number of wins.

United announced Ronaldo's win on social media and the fans were quick to celebrate the forward. This is a selection of replies from Twitter:
