The Greater Manchester and Lancashire hotels named best places to stay in Britain

A hotel in Manchester and two hotels in Lancashire have been named in The Times and Sunday Times’ annual list of 100 of Britain’s best hotels. The list looks at the best places to stay across the country in 2023, from cosy country retreats to slick city hotels.

The Retreat at Alcot Park in Berkshire topped this year’s list as hotel of the year. A renovated 18-century country house located just outside of Hungerford, it impressed reviewers with its affordability and range of facilities.

The list is compiled by an experienced selection of reviewers, who consider various aspects of the hotel, such as the level of service, style and value for money. It features hotels for each area of Britain, with several selected from our region.

Only one hotel in Manchester made the list as a new entry, Leven, nestled in the Gay Village and just a stone’s throw away from Piccadilly. Reviewers were particularly impressed by the hotel’s prime location and its aesthetic - it’s housed in a former cotton warehouse (naturally).

The Times described it as a “mix of an intimate boutique hotel and an aparthotel with an industrial design”. They praised the fact that some rooms have a useful kitchen, making it perfect for those who want a fuss-free city break.

The Cartford Inn in Little Eccleston, Lancashire, also made the cut thanks to a menu curated by ex-Claridge’s chef Chris Bury and tastefully-designed rooms. The 17th-century coaching inn, located northwest of Preston, won reviewers over with locally-sourced dishes served with a flourish, predicting a future Michelin star for the venue.

The hotel has 15 “funky” rooms and an “enchanting” courtyard, allowing for indoor and outdoor dining. Owners Patrick and Julie Beaume ensure that guests enjoy the hotel's “magical brand of hospitality".

Included among the 100 hotels is the Freemasons at Wiswell, nestled in a picturesque village south of Clitheroe. Guests can enjoy a restful night in one of the hotel’s four bedrooms, described as “luxurious dens” with “elegant and contemporary” design touches.

Reviewers were most surprised by the country inn’s impressive dining options, with “bold, bravura combinations and a four-course tasting menu”. The hotel is located in the stunning Ribble Valley, with miles of stunning countryside to explore on its doorstep.
