What the Crossing Actually Looks Like
Nothing prepares you for the sound. Before you see a single wildebeest, you hear the herd, a low, collective grunt that builds like a crowd outside a stadium. Then the bank opposite fills with bodies, thousands of them pressed together, and the animals at the front stall. They don't want to go in. Crocodiles wait below the surface, almost motionless. The herd builds pressure from behind until one animal breaks, and then the entire mass follows in a chaos of hooves, spray, and noise that lasts anywhere from four minutes to forty.
