Gillingham's search for a new manager coming to an end could provide clarity for Bolton Wanderers in their pursuit of Kyle Dempsey.
The Gills are currently without a permanent boss with Steve Lovell in caretaker charge of the Priestfield club following the departure of Steve Evans.
Steve Morison is reportedly the favourite to take the job at the Gills, who are 23rd in League One and 10 points from safety after the 7-2 hammering at the hands of Oxford United over the weekend.

And the appointment of a new permanent boss at Priestfield could be the decisive factor in Dempsey becoming a Wanderers player or not, which has now been confirmed as former Cardiff City and Millwall boss Neil Harris.
Wanderers are targeting the Gills captain as their final piece of January transfer window business and are hopeful that a deal can be done before the 11pm deadline, though nothing is certain.
Ian Evatt says Wanderers have respected the Gills search for a new boss but vowed once again that the latest offer made for Dempsey is their final one and it is not an issue if the Kent club do not accept it.
Evatt said: “From what I understand they’re trying to appoint a manager and then a manager needs to bring in his own players, so there’s lots going on and we’ve had to sit back and respect that and we have.
“People will get to understand the way we do business. There isn’t any mucking around or negotiating or we don’t come in and try and low ball anyone. We will pay what we feel the right value is for any player and that’s our offer. If you take it, great, and if you don’t, that’s fine as well.
“We’re not into this ‘we’ll start at 50 quid and really we see it as 100 quid and you see it as 200 quid’. We don’t want to go and waste time like that.
"We’re all too busy to be going back and forth. We do what we say and we say what we do and we’re honest, we try and do the right things by everybody and we have to gain a reputation of doing that.
“People need to know when Bolton Wanderers come knocking for one of their players, we know it’s not a negotiation, we know they’re they’re not trying to do us over and they know that we’re not going to be able to try and do them over.
"It is straight talking, strictly business, this is how we see it, this is what we see it - yes or no - and that saves everybody time.”
