While ghosts are commonly thought to be a constant presence in 'haunted' locations, many are only said to appear at certain times of the year.
As we head into February, reported sightings of certain spectres may become more frequent. The Paranormal Database has compiled a list of the ghosts across the UK that are believed to come out only during the second month of the year.
According to the website, the ghosts of Clan MacDonald at Glencoe are set to appear on February 13. The area is the site of one of the bloodiest massacres in Scottish history, which took place during the winter of 1692.
In the early hours of February 13, Government troops led by the Campbells slaughtered 38 MacDonalds in their sleep, including chief Maclain.
While others were able to escape the bloodshed, many of them soon died of exposure on the mountainside. Overall, the estimated number of deaths lies somewhere between 40 and 300.
Now, every year on the anniversary of the horrific massacre, the glen is said to be haunted by the ghosts of those who were slaughtered. Some say the screams and cries of men and women can be heard throughout Glencoe during the night.
Though not in Scotland, another ghost who is said to appear in February is that of none other than Mary Queen of Scots herself.
According to legend, the staircase at the Talbot Hotel in the North Northamptonshire town of Oundle originally came from the nearby Fotheringhay Castle.
The castle was Mary's final place of imprisonment, and she was tried and executed there in 1587. Her ghost is said to have come with the staircase when it was moved to the hotel.
As stated on The Paranormal Database, one guest at the Talbot was awoken by "something" sitting on their bed, while the gaunt face of a woman has reportedly been seen staring from out of the hotel's windows.
