The GC standings have developed significantly for a second day in a row at the Tour de France Femmes, with stage 5 delivering a dramatic day of punchy climbs that saw several big names lose ground and a trio emerge at the head of affairs.
The bigger climbing tests on Mont Ventoux and the Col d'Eze are still yet to come later in the race but, following on from the critical time trial test on stage 4, the short sharp hills in Beaujolais on Wednesday produced some serious time gaps and GC developments.
Marlen Reusser (Movistar) retains the yellow jersey as the overall leader, hanging with the uphill accelerations from Demi Vollering (FDJ United-SUEZ) and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM) to finish in that leading trio with the two former winners.
Vollering won the stage, gaining 10 bonus seconds, with Reusser taking second place and six bonus seconds, while Niewiadoma-Phinney was third with four bonus seconds.
What that means is that Reusser's lead over second-placed Vollering at the top of the standings has been cut by four seconds, and now stands at a slim 12 seconds.
Niewiadoma, meanwhile, moves up three places into third overall, 1:17 down on Reusser's lead.
Although Niewiadoma is still more than a minute down on the leading duo, it's that trio that has cut clear at the top of the GC standings, with the story of the day being the time losses suffered by a string of big names.
The defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Visma-Lease a Bike) conceded 2:35 and now sits more than five minutes off the lead of the race in 17th place. The struggles that emerged for the Frenchwoman in the time trial were clearly not a one-off and the chances of her defending her title are now extremely remote.
Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) finished alongside Ferrand-Prévot and suffered a similar dent to her hopes. Meanwhile Paula Blasi (UAE l'IMAD) only finished eight seconds in front of that duo and while her teammate Elisa Longo Borghini fared better, the Italian still lost nearly two minutes herself.
In terms of the top 10 beyond the leading trio, it's Niewiadoma's own teammate Antonia Niedermaier jumping into fourth overall at 2:40 down, having stolen a march ahead of the final climb.
The German finished in a trio led home for fourth place by Dominika Wlodarczyk (UAE l'IMAD), who rises six places into fifth at 2:54, just ahead of her teammate Longo Borghini in sixth at 2:58.
Isabella Holmgren (Lidl-Trek) was the final member of that secondary trio on the stage and rises five places into seventh overall at 3:05.
Femke de Vries (Visma-Lease a Bike) was another riser on a strong day and amid Ferrand-Prévot's woes she looks like Visma's best card at eighth overall at 3:11.
Strong TT performer Cedrine Kerbaol (EF Education-Oatly) finished with Ferrand-Prévot and slips six places to ninth at 3:41, while Blasi rounds out the top 10 at 3:51.
Van der Breggen is now down in 12th at 4:04, 10 seconds behind her teammate, Nienke Vinke, who was a strong seventh on the stage and now 11th overall.
The Tour de France Femmes continues on Thursday with stage 6, another day of short climbs ahead of Friday's setpiece mountain showdown on Mont Ventoux.
