Tens of thousands of pounds have been pouring in to certain parts of Wales to try and help beleaguered Conservative MPs hold onto their seats. In Anglesey Tory MP Virginia Crosbie has received more than £45,000 in private donations since 2022 on top of £50,000 she has previously received. We looked at the declarations of interests submitted by every Welsh MP. These do not just include donations to bankroll election campaigns but also tickets to events, trips abroad, and second jobs.
For each of the 40 Welsh MPs we have listed any cash donation as well as any gift over £100 and any second jobs (or third and fourth jobs in the case of one MP). We have not included declarations that relate to work-related travel (visits on parliamentary business). We have put the most recent declarations (from the start of 2022 onwards) at the top of each MP's section with more historic declarations listed below.
The MP's who have declared the most donations:
Virginia Crosbie, Conservative - Ynys Mon
In just the last year £45,500 of private donations have been declared by the Conservative Yns Mon MP Virginia Crosbie. On March 16, 2022, she received £20,000 from Patrick Evershed, an investment fund manager who was awarded a CBE for public and political service in June 2019.
She received two donations, one in June and another in November 2022, from the Cayzer Trust Company which is wholly owned by members of the Cayzer family. It is the principal vehicle through which the bulk of the commercial interests of the Cayzer family are consolidated including a strategic holding of some 34% in Caledonia Investments PLC, which is an investment trust listed on the London Stock Exchange.
In April 2022 she also received a hefty £15,000 from the Carlton Club Political Committee. The Carlton Club is a members'-only club in London. It was the original home of the Conservative Party before the days of Conservative Central Office. According to the club's website: “Today the club continues to uphold these values in its day-to-day activities."
Prior to this Ms Crosbie received just over £50,000 since becoming an MP from private donors. Many MPs receive the bulk of their donations just before an election to help with campaigning. However she was only given £5,500 before the 2019 election.
So why is so much private money pouring into this Welsh constituency? The seat is a three-way shootout between the Tories, Labour, and Plaid with high-profile Plaid politician Rhun ap Iorwerth planning to leave the Senedd to run in the next election. Polling suggests the Tories are on course to lose the seat in the next election. When WalesOnline approached Ms Crosbie she confirmed that the aim of the donations was to help keep the seat in Conservative hands.
She said: "I am proud and humbled that so many people and organisations are willing to donate to me so I can do my best to help the good people of Ynys Môn. I must be doing a few things right. The money is used for my campaign fund and to help islanders. This ranges from paying for refreshments for those who came to my cost of living fair in Holyhead recently or for more substantial spends like my annual report so there is no cost to the taxpayer.
“Other donated money has been spent on my defibrillator campaign for the island and for an event for dementia carers. Previously I have used donated funds to run a campaign about mental health – including sending a leaflet to every home on the island. This is a subject close to my heart following the suicide of my brother and something that could well have saved lives on Anglesey. I make no apology for taking money from other sources and using it on Ynys Môn to improve lives and keep the island blue."
Dr James Davies, Conservative - Vale of Clwyd
Since the start of 202 Mr Davies has received £5,000 from IX Wireless Limited based in Preston. They are a telecoms company and according to their website: "2019 saw IX Wireless Limited participate successfully in the UK Government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme, with ten separate schemes approved in Northern England." He also received £9,500 from the Carlton Club Political Committee as discussed above.
According to Mr Davies the donations were made to his "community account". He told WalesOnline: "The community account is used to fund items such as printing and postage of campaign letters, newspapers, and leaflets to constituents, meeting the costs of local community campaigns eg. the printing of postcards re access to cash for local shops, the printing and posting of Christmas cards to constituents and local businesses, the rental for a franking machine, the facilitation of community events and constituent visits to Parliament, gifts for children relating to competitions I might run, and so forth. Two years earlier Mr Hart was one of 50 MPs who wrote to then health secretary for England Andrew Lansley expressing serious concerns over the government's plain packaging proposals. However, such a measure could have extremely negative consequences elsewhere."

On the subject of the rugby games he attended he said: “On rugby hospitality – if I accept it – my general rule is only to go with local businesses or organisations where there is a direct constituency or parliamentary relevance and a working dinner/lunch around the match, which was the case for all of the ones listed. I always ask for the full commercial price from the sponsor, so that I am completely transparent as to the commercial value – though usually it just amounts to ticket and food.”
