Barafundle in Pembrokeshire came second only to Keem in County Mayo, Ireland and it was joined in the top 10 by Mwnt in Ceredigion, in third place, Marloes Sands, also in Pembrokeshire, in fourth and Gower's Rhossili Bay came in at number eight.
The data comes from Ocean Bottle, a recycled, reusable water bottle which, when bought funds the collection of 1000 pieces of plastic before it hits the ocean. Their study compiled the top 10 after analysing the levels of E.coli and intestinal Enterococci per 100ml in the samples taken from each waterway, sourced from “bathing water quality” governmental sites Both counts must be at safe levels, (a count under 130 per 100ml for E.coli and a count under 104 per 100ml for Enterococci) for the water to be deemed safe to swim in. To determine the best wild swimming spots, they then cross-referenced each waterway’s Google rating and number of reviews. The higher the rating and review count, the better the waterway.
