The five most underappreciated players at Arsenal including one name that might surprise you

Sometimes individuals don't get the credit they deserve. As things stand right now at Arsenal, everything is looking positive with the Gunners on course to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in five years.

It will be a landmark achievement for the club if they manage to get back into Europe with manager Mikel Arteta at the helm, especially after the start to the season which saw the team lose three consecutive league matches.

We take a look at some of the players who may not always receive the credit they deserve, with some key quotes from Arteta on their individual qualities and what they bring to the team.

Martin Odegaard

"Martin for us is a really important player, that's for sure," said Arteta.

"He's showing that every single week. He's phenomenal to work with. He's developing areas of his game that we discussed, that he agreed, and that we believed could help him impact matches in a much more powerful way.

"His whole mindset, the way he prepares himself, the way he treats people, the way he plays the game, is just exactly what we want from an Arsenal player."

Alexandre Lacazette

"When I see our striker in the 85th minute, chasing a full-back in the corner flag, winning the ball back, playing, going, fighting, missing one chance, missing two chances, going again. What can I do?

"I can only praise him and try to help him as much as possible and give him support. At the end he got the reward. For me, it's Lacazette's goal.

"We don't know what is going to happen at the end of the season. What he needs to do is put aside that future. It is part of our game, we don't have contracts that run for 20 years. That's part of our job and we have to be conscious of that. "There's nothing to tell him but to praise him, because every single day he behaves like someone that wants to stay with us."

Kieran Tierney

"It's just the way he is, he does it in a natural way. He's a shy boy but I think he represents all of the values we want to install and that are in the DNA of this club.

"He came here and it took him a while, he had a really bad injury... but he's a natural leader. You see how he behaves on that pitch, and when he talks he says the right thing and it's exactly what we're looking for."

Granit Xhaka

"With the way we want to play, if we get him on board I think he can be a tremendous player for the football club.

“I like everything about him. His commitment, I like the way he is, the way he lifts his profession, how focused he is. Every time I am talking, he is listening and is willing to learn.

“He is a great football player. The way we want to play, there are not many with his quality on the ball, his range of pass, so I am delighted to have him.”

Takehiro Tomiyasu

“He’s such a great character. He’s a top professional who has given us a lot of composure in the backline.

"The way he defends, the way he understands what we want to do with him has been top. The adaptation & way he’s done it deserves a lot of credit.”
