The eyewatering amounts MPs who quit Boris Johnson's government get in redundancy pay

The senior MPs who have quit Boris Johnson's government are in line for eyewatering amounts of redundancy payments. The Liberal Democrats have called on Mr Johnson and other resigning ministers not to claim the money they are entitled to which totals more than £300,000 of redundancy payments.

In an earlier version of this article, we wrongly reported that the total bill could be £423,000. This was based on analysis provided by the Liberal Democrats which wrongly said that Parliamentary Private Secretaries received salaries of £22,375 and were entitled to payoffs of £5,594. The PPS role is unpaid. We apologise for the error and any confusion or embarrassment caused.

Under the Ministerial and Other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991 those resigning from office are entitled to 25% of the annual salaries they were paid when holding that office.

Michelle Donelan, who spent just one full day in the role of education secretary for the UK Government, will be entitled to a redundancy payment of almost £17,000, the party claims. The matter was brought up in the Commons and paymaster general Michael Ellis, taking questions for the government, said it was a matter of "statute, not for me".

The Welsh MPs who are entitled to claim redundancy pay are:

Simon Hart, former Welsh secretary

Cabinet salary: £67,505

Pay out: £16,876

The full list of what everyone could claim for their roles (which are paid on top of their MP salaries) as of 11.50am on July 7.

Liberal Democrat chief whip Wendy Chamberlain MP said: "Conservative MPs spent months defending Boris Johnson and failed to get rid of him when they had the chance. The public won’t forgive them for keeping him in place for so long. Now Conservative infighting and sheer incompetence has cost the taxpayer yet more money during this cost of living crisis. Conservative ministers who resigned should do the decent thing and pass up their payoffs for the good of the country."
