Minneapolis is united in its opposition to the ongoing ICE invasion, taking to the freezing streets in their thousands to demand that these murderous thugs be booted out of their state.
Opposition to ICE is so uniform that it’s bringing some unexpected people out to protest – but a former deeply conservative religious rights activist marching alongside left-leaning activists is the last thing anyone expected.
This is Reverend Rob Schenck, former chairman of the board of directors of the Evangelical Church Alliance, a notable anti-abortion activist, and who claims to have privately lobbied Supreme Court justices to ensure rulings favorable to evangelicals.
So, you’d think Rev. Schenck would be just another dyed-in-the-wool MAGA acolyte happy to lick the boots that kick him. Well, apparently not:

“I’m making up for errors of my past. I spent 35 years as an activist on the religious right, doing a lot of damage, helping to deliver the entities that are now inflicting all of this suffering on so many people, and in the process, contradicting, in every possible way, the message I thought I was promoting in those years. But in fact I was doing the opposite.”
He continued:
“So now I have to do that work of repair. And it came too late. And I have what time I have. But I want to do that repair. And just being present here and being in solidarity with all those folks is part of that repair work in my own soul, but more importantly in the external world where people have to live with the consequences of my decades of harm and injury.”
Schenck goes on to underline that the protesters he’s spoken with have been “more gracious” than any of the Christian leaders he used to keep company with. He described his joining the fight against ICE as his “redemption”.
Walking the road to Damascus
Sadly, Rev. Schenck is a rare instance of someone on the right admitting that they’re wrong and trying to change. It should always be remembered that there’s little prospect of fame and financial security in supporting leftist ideals and fighting back against government tyranny. Meanwhile, if you sign up as a MAGA influencer, you don’t have to look too far to find some evil billionaire willing to toss money at you.
But it’s clear Rev. Schenck realized that his former hateful actions were incompatible with Christianity. In truth, it’s insane that any Christian should ever support ICE given that Christ’s teachings are explicitly about aiding those in need and that his family were refugees fleeing persecution.
If Christ did return and saw what evangelicals were doing in his name, we suspect he wouldn’t be particularly pleased with them.
