Breast cancer has been a significant global health concern, being most commonly detected cancer in women and contributes to the highest number of cancer-related fatalities among women. Surprisingly, it stands as fourth leading cause of all cancer-related deaths globally. India at the cusp of it, faces a significant burden of breast cancer with a woman diagnosed with breast cancer, in India, every 4 minutes. Despite the constant efforts being taken, early detection rates remain critically low. According to the study by National centre for Biotechnology Information (NIH) revealed that the breast cancer screening rate in India stands at a mere 0.9% in India and over 60 per cent of breast cancer cases in India are diagnosed at stage 3 or 4, significantly lowering the chances of survival. The country ranks highest in number of estimated breast cancer deaths (98,337) for the year 2022 among females.
While traditional methods such as mammography, clinical breast test, and self-examinations have significantly contributed to early diagnosis, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in breast cancer detection is changing the scenario. With technological advancement, artificial intelligence is emerging as an effective tool to enhance human expertise.
