The eerie abandoned orphanage in County Durham which has stood empty since 1998

Creepy corridors and eerie rooms remain inside this partially demolished and decaying building which has stood empty for over 20 years.

The former St Peter's School and Orphanage in Gainford, County Durham, opened in 1900 and accommodated up to 300 children up to the age of 13 years old.

After closing in 1983, the building was used as a nursing home between 1986 and 1998. However, it has stood empty ever since with several proposals for the site failing to materialise.

In 2019, plans to build new homes on the site were revealed, including converting the existing Victorian red brick building into nine flats and building 48 homes on the wider site, but later rejected. And last year new plans to build 37 homes on land next to the former school were once again rejected as it did not include plans to demolish or redevelop the school building itself.

Despite demolition of a section of the building in 2021 much of the building is still standing. However, over the years, it has suffered vandalism and been significantly damaged during a number of fires at the site.

In 2016, five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform attended a blaze at the site which was believed to have been started deliberately. And in 2020 a fire ripped through the building destroying two floors and the roof.

A structural survey conducted by Building Design Northern in recent years deemed the building to be unsafe and "strongly" advised that it was demolished at the "earliest possible opportunity".
