Edinburgh's rich history is apparent the moment you walk down the Royal Mile and see the stunning buildings you'll find there.
However, as with most Scottish cities, the humble pub was always the centre of the community, a place to catch up and swap stories and in the capital, there are a few that haven't changed much in the 100 or so years since they were first built.
One in particular, Bennets Bar on Leven Street has origins as a watering hole dating all the way back to the late 1830s, however, the current bar, which has retained much of its original character, was only built just under 120 years ago in 1906.
The bar is packed with antique charm and is perfect for those who love not only connecting with the city's heritage but also enjoying a dram of whisky (of which they have over 200) or a refreshing pint of real ale.

Among the highlights in the bar are the stunning stained-glass windows, ornate mirrors (surrounded by cherubs and figures in classical dress) and of course the beautiful brass taps on the bar, wooden floors and wooden gantry.
The most fascinating relic of the Victorian era in Bennets, however, is undoubtedly its 'jug bar', which is separated by a wooden and leaded glass panel.
This is a small secluded room in the bar that originally would have been used by those who did not want to be seen drinking.
You would originally be served through a small hatch.
These were common features of pubs at the time, as drinking was viewed by many as a contemptible pastime.
Usually, the secluded areas were used by women, priests, and policemen.
Behind the bar, you'll also find spirits casks mounted on the gantry, a rarity in this day and age. While there is even a fireplace to warm yourself on cold evenings.
These days the pub offers all of its original charm, as well as live music and even a bite to eat, oh and did we mention it's dog friendly too?
