Plague, one of the deadliest diseases in history, has once again made headlines in recent days following the death of a scientist in Irkutsk, in Siberia. The woman died from pneumonia of unknown origin, which raised suspicions of a possible pneumonic plague infection.
However, the Russian authorities have stated that no cases of plague have been confirmed in the region and that tests carried out on the deceased woman’s contacts have come back negative. The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested additional information to clarify what happened and has offered its support to the Russian authorities.
