The devastating Kumamoto earthquake is unusual – here’s why

  • A devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Japan 's Kumamoto on Tuesday at approximately 4.27pm local time, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.
  • The quake, centred in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, caused significant damage to public infrastructure and trapped shoppers as a building's second floor collapsed.
  • Scientists from the US Geological Survey (USGS) identified the earthquake as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting, a rarer type of inland seismic activity compared to Japan's more common subduction zone quakes.
  • Unlike typical offshore quakes caused by colliding tectonic plates, this event was triggered inland by thrust events, where forces push one rock block over another, occurring within the upper Eurasian tectonic plate.
  • Seismologists noted that while inland earthquakes are generally smaller than major subduction events, their proximity to population centres means they can cause more severe shaking and greater impact in affected areas.
