The Desi Cat Is Genetically Distinct: What Thousands of Years of Indian Streets Have Produced

A cat that science is only beginning to catch up with

The desi cat has no breed standard, no kennel club registration, no pedigree papers. What it has instead is roughly 4,000 years of continuous natural selection on the Indian subcontinent, and a genome that reflects every bit of it. A 2021 study published in PLOS Genetics mapped domestic cat populations across Asia and found that South Asian cats, including those from India, cluster into a genetically distinct group, separate from European, Middle Eastern, and East Asian lineages. The divergence is not cosmetic. It runs deep into the cat's immune response, coat adaptation, and metabolic profile.
