The curious case of Kemar Roofe months after leaving Rangers

Kemar Roofe scored some vitally important goals for Rangers.

During his four years at the club, after signing for £4.5m from Anderlecht in 2020, the striker helped fire the Ibrox side to their 55th Scottish Premiership title to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.

Roofe also played a big role in helping Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side all the way to the Europa League final in Seville two years ago.

The 31-year-old was released by Rangers in the summer, as Philippe Clement waved goodbye to some big earners in the squad.

Roofe was joined by Ryan Jack, John Lundstram, Borna Barisic and Jon McLaughlin, as they all left as free agents at the start of June, meanwhile, Connor Goldson was moved on for a fee later in the window.

Of those names lifted though, the one major difference is that Roofe remains the only player without a new club.

Roofe is a free agent four months after leaving Ibrox - where he scored 38 goals from 50 starts.

Of course, his unfortunate injury record held him back, and might well be the reason why he's still not found a new home since leaving Glasgow.

But everything seems to have gone quiet in the search for a new club for Roofe.

He was rumoured to be training with former club Oxford United earlier in the summer, but manager Des Buckingham said back in August that those were false.

“Kemar Roofe has not been training with the club, and hasn’t been in the club at all," he said. “He’s had a wonderful career, certainly from here and where he’s gone on to play.

“We’ve said we want to bring in a centre forward. We need to make sure they fit what we want them to do.

“Kemar has got a lot of strong qualities, as have a lot of other centre forwards that we’re looking at.

“It’s about taking our time and making sure we get the right decision because it is a very important one for us.”

Roofe was also rumoured to be in with a chance of signing for Wayne Rooney's Plymouth, but nothing has come of that so far.
