Netflix has just released the first trailer for The Crown season six. Part one of the drama’s final installment will be landing on the streamer on November 16.
The tense two-minute clip sees Elizabeth Debicki returning to play Princess Diana once more. Following her divorce from Prince Charles, her world has become a nightmare. Hounded by paparazzi everywhere she goes, the Princess manages to find small moments of comfort with her children and in a new romance with the Egyptian filmmaker Dodi Fayed.
The first glimpse at the royal drama shows Diana’s world getting smaller and smaller as the media intrudes on her life and follows her every move; in various clips, people bang on her car's windows and chase her on boats.
"I don't really understand how I ended up here," says Diana. "Dashing around, and losing sight of myself in the process. You know, I think that's been the story of my whole life."
The trailer then goes on to show the lead up to the terrible Paris car crash that killed her, and the shock that followed the seismic event as the news was shared around the world.
The sixth series, which will be The Crown’s last, will be covering the time period between 1997 to 2005 – a particularly difficult period for the royal family, as Princess Diana died in August 31, 1997.
The new series will not be shying away from the drama: the first part of the show will focus on the last months of Diana’s life on the run up to the horrific accident, while the second part (which is being released on December 14) will focus on the fallout of her death and its effect on her family, the Royal family and the public.
The upcoming series’ logline sets the scene: “A relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences. Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion. As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate.”
The Crown’s all-star cast is returning for its concluding series with Dominic West returning to play Princes Charles, Imelda Staunton playing Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce playing Prince Philip and Lesley Manville playing Princess Margaret. Salim Daw and Khalid Abdalla will also be returning to play father and son, Mohamed Al-Fayed and Dodi Fayed.
Bertie Carvel will play Tony Blair, Olivia Williams will play Camilla Parker Bowles, Ed McVey will play the older Prince William, while Meg Bellamy will play Kate Middleton. Meanwhile new faces Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards will be joining the cast as the young Princes.
Speaking about playing Al-Fayed in the upcoming series, Daw said:“I adore this character. In this series, he is so human and he’s so colourful. He’s hard sometimes, very hard, funny, like a child – with his son he’s sometimes very, very hard but he has plenty of love for his son and the audience will see that and will feel exactly what I’m talking about.”
Similarly Khalid Abdalla (Moon Knight), spoke to Netflix about enjoying playing the Egyptian businessman’s son: “It’s been the honour of my life to be part of this project, to be part of The Crown, and to play Dodi,” he said.
