The Crown is back and with it an inevitable explosion of divided opinions. After the first episode, viewers were left more ticked off about a spelling error than they were about the depiction of the Royal family. In this opening episode, we saw Queen Elizabeth II, now portrayed by Imelda Staunton, visiting a dairy farm in the Lancashire town of Warton.
As the Queen makes her speech, eagle-eyed viewers couldn't help but notice a spelling error on a dairy tanker parked behind her, which bore the word 'Morecombe'. Those in the Lancashire area know Warton is about an hour's drive away from the seaside town of Morecambe, but they've never heard of 'Morecombe'.
Having initially been thrilled about the town being featured in the series, a number of fans have since taken to Twitter to voice their disgruntlement, frustrated that such an error could have made it through to the final cut.
One disappointed viewer tweeted: "First episode of The Crown, buzzing that Morecambe was mentioned… then they spelled it wrong."
Another fumed: "Seriously? You do know that 'Morecombe' doesn't exist and 'Morecambe' does? Think you need to sack a few researchers. I'm shocked such a schoolgirl error was made. Bet you thought no one would notice…."
A third joked: "Having lived in Morecambe as a student many years ago, I would have happily relieved you of a portion of the £10 million per episode for the correct spelling of the town!"
BBC Lancashire reporter Graham Liver also tweeted a screenshot from the episode, writing: “Never mind the historical inaccuracies of The Crown, they’ve spelled Morecambe wrong!”
Meanwhile, another seriously unimpressed person sighed: “You spend $13 million an episode, and nobody checks how to spell Morecambe.”
Season five of The Crown takes fans back to 1991, a time when the late Queen Elizabeth was facing a number of challenges both as monarch and within her own family. With support for her abdication high in opinion polls, Her Majesty also had to contend with relentless press scrutiny over the strained marriages of her adult children.
Series five of The Crown is available to stream on Netflix now.
