The 'correct' way to clean wooden spoons safely and remove food build-up

Wooden spoons are one of those kitchen items that you probably don't think too much about deep-cleaning, often just giving them a scrub under the tap once you're finished cooking. But they need a bit of extra care thanks to the absorbent material that can harbour food debris, dirt and grime if they aren't properly cleaned every once in a while.

This can make them unsafe for cooking with, so a cleaning guru on TikTok has revealed how you can make them as good as new again. However, she's warned that you could see some pretty "gross" results.

The Mirror reports that Lulaboo Jenkins, who posts on the video app as @lulabookjenkins, made a short clip in response to @kimmyskreations, who shared a clip submerging her dirty wooden spoons into a pot of boiling water.

After seeing the dirt and grime bubbling to the surface, Lulaboo was desperate to try the trick on her own spoons to see if it actually worked. She captioned the video: "Holy c*** I should have done this sooner! Lord help me this was gross." She shared: "I've had these for like, years. And now I'm very very scared."

She held some of her oldest spoons up to the camera, saying she was "scared for what comes out." After she removed the spoons from of the boiling water, she was disgusted to see that she couldn't even see the bottom of the glass pan.

In the comments, people were equally grossed out by the build-up of grime, but some were able to see the funny side of it. "Now the flavours are gone", one joked.

"That's why your food tastes so good. Now you've boiled out all the flavorings", another agreed, following their comment with a crying laughter face. Someone else said: "I hope you didn't let those years of seasonings go to waste! Cook some ramen in it!"

A cleaning guru left a comment, writing: "I boil mine once a year with vinegar, then oil them down with mineral oil, mine have never splintered or warped."
