When Mary’s primary school-aged son Christopher started refusing to go to class, she felt powerless. She knew he was anxious and afraid to go without the “right” gear, but Mary was having to make difficult choices between buying school supplies or food for her family. She couldn’t afford it all.
“It was an underlying thing of not having what the other kids had,” Mary says. “You could see the obvious differences of what he had to what they had. So I think that’s what made it a lot harder.”
