The Chase viewers delighted as Welsh contestant scoops jackpot by himself with last gasp guess

The Chase viewers were left delighted after a Welsh contestant won the jackpot all by himself.

Alan, 62, from Cardiff, walked away with £9,000 after defeating Chaser Paul Sinha in a thrilling final Chase, which came down to the final seconds.

Earlier in the episode, retired IT consultant Alan impressed in his cash builder by answering nine out of his 11 questions correctly in what host Bradley Walsh said was a "top drawer" performance.

However, while his teammates bagged another £21,000 between them in their cash builders, they were caught by the Sinnerman in their head-to-heads, leaving Alan to take on the final chase on his own.

The 62-year-old, who admitted to Bradley that he was "a bit of a quizzer", barely put a foot wrong during the episode, and answered 19 questions correctly in the final round, giving the Chaser a tough mountain to climb.

During the final round, he demonstrated his wide-ranging knowledge, correctly answering questions about Calvin Klein, Ella Fitzgerald and Rangers Football Club.

But despite flexing his trivia muscles and setting his opponent a high score to beat, it looked certain that Alan was going to miss out on the money that he told his wife he'd put towards cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean, as the Sinnerman got off to a flying start.

With 11 seconds left on the clock, the Chaser had to answer just one more question correctly to catch Alan, but stumbled at the final hurdle to hand him a fighting chance.

Bradley asked Paul: "What German song title in the musical Cabaret means Sir?". As the clock turned red, the visibly-panicked Chaser incorrectly answered: "Mein Papa".

The question was then handed over to Alan, who came agonisingly close as he answered: "Herr". Shaking his head, Bradley revealed the correct answer to be "Mein Herr", adding that Alan's incorrect guess was "brutal".

His mistake meant that Paul still had a chance to deny him his prize, but with just three seconds on the clock, the Chaser interrupted the next question with another panicked guess.

"What colour are the stars on the Venezuelan flag?" asked Bradley. After Paul interrupted with his guess of red, Alan paused and gave the correct answer of white.

Knowing he was beaten, Paul started applauding as the clock ran down to zero, with Alan beaming as he secured his prize money.

However, while the Chaser was impressed with his opponent's performance, the 62-year-old admitted he had taken a punt on the deciding question.

"I'm happy," he said. "I think I shall be taking my other half on a cruise somewhere".

He added: "That guess with the coloured stars was a complete guess," to which Bradley replied: "It doesn't matter how they get into the back of the net, as long as they go".

Viewers of the ITV quiz show took to Twitter to share their delight at Alan's win.

"Well done Alan on The Chase you did really well," one said. "Very pleased for you. Congrats."

"Great performance by Alan," said another. "Absolutely well done! Lovely guy too!"

A third added: "Alan smashed it. Top man!" while a fourth said his performance "speaks for itself".

The Chase returns at 5pm with all-new episodes on ITV every weekday afternoon.
