The Chase's Mark Labbett's incredible journey from 'overweight maths teacher' to slimmed-up star

Mark Labbett has continued his icnredible weight loss journey by slimming down again, noting that cutting out two foods helped him to do so.

The Welsh native, known to most people as 'The Beast' on Virgin Media's The Chase, was given the nickname by producers for his size at the very first series of the quiz show.

Standing at over six foot five inches tall, Mark at one stage weighed 29 stone.

But after a health diagnosis, he went on a strict nutrition plan which has caused him to drop an amazing 64kg over the last few years.

Speaking to This Morning earlier this week, Mark explained that before fame on the popular game show, he saw himself as an 'overweight maths teacher'.

How much weight did Mark Labbett lose?

Back in 2003 when he was still a full-time maths teacher, Mark was at his heaviest weight of 29 stone.

But in 2016, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which meant he had to bring in some drastic changes to his lifestyle in order to prevent any further issues.

That included a much healthier diet and an improved exercise regime.

He's now the "smallest" he's been in 30 years after shedding around 64kg, still standing tall at 6 ft 6.

How did Mark Labbett lose weight?

The Chase star really started shedding the pounds during the first Covid lockdown imposed in Britain in 2020.

Having shed around three stone between 2016 and 2019, Mark was already on the right path, but the closing of nurseries at the start of the Covid outbreak was a catalyst.

He then had to chase his "hyperactive" toddler around for weeks on end - meaning the weight fell off him.

Speaking to the Loose Women panel last year, he explained: "I found at the end of the evening instead of going to the fridge for late night snacking, all I could do was collapse on the bed."

He also has his pet Labrador Retriever Baloo to thank for his transformation, as he revealed on ITV's The Pet Show with Dermot O'Leary and Joanna Page.

He said: "I was walking him around the fields, taking me places... I think he's helped a lot, simply because I'm doing more activity."

Did Mark cut out anything from his diet?

In terms of diet, cutting down on sugar and carbs was the key to his "complete nutrition overhaul".

Mark didn't undergo any surgery to help with his weight loss. He was warned by doctors that having a gastric band fitted would be dangerous, because of the way his body digests sugar.

He also found that the weight continued to drop off after displaying Covid-like symptoms such as a loss of taste and smell, saying he "didn't want to eat" in the two weeks that he had them.
