Bradley Walsh ended up with his head in his hands and even briefly walked away from a contestant on the Chase after she sealed her fate following a tense head-to-head.
The reaction by the host, 62, was seen during a repeated episode of the ITV quiz show that aired on Wednesday (April 5) and which featured chaser Darragh Ennis.
The episode also featured contestants Matthew, Jane, Kirsten and Ed, who hoped to win a cash prize. Jane was the third player to showcase her general knowledge.
She earned £7,000 in the cash builder, which prompted praise from host Bradley, who told her: "Great job".
She declined lower and higher offers for the subsequent head-to-head round, which didn't get off to the best start as she incorrectly answered two consecutive questions.
Her wrong answers about aviation terminology and sports teams meant that Darragh closed the gap between them, making for some tense scenes shortly afterwards.
The pair both managed to correct answer four consecutive questions which had been related to religion, noble gases, zodiac signs and geography respectively.
Jane only needed to correctly answer one more question to secure her place in the final, whilst Darragh needed to correctly answer it - and Jane get it wrong - to catch her.
The question was about William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with both Jane and Darragh choosing the wrong answer from the multiple choice options they were given.
The follow-up question saw host Bradley ask the pair: "The term 'suave' comes from a Latin word with what meaning?" The multiple choice options were 'sweet,' 'sour' or 'salty'.
Jane - who revealed that she had studied Latin at school - unfortunately chose one of the incorrect options, with her guessing that the term comes from a word meaning 'sour'.
Upon seeing her answer, Bradley put his head in his hands. It led Jane to remark: "I guess I'm wrong from the reaction". The host confirmed that he believed that to be the case.
After shaking his head to the camera, he commented: "When someone's suave they are ... smooth, charming." Jane added that she wouldn't have used the word sweet.
After it was confirmed that Jane had answered the question wrong, Bradley looked at the audience before walking away from the contestant with his hands in his pockets.
He shortly returned to stand beside her and said that if Darragh had answered it correctly Jane would be going home. He said: "This is tough to take after all that work".
Darragh had correctly answered 'sweet'. And although it meant Jane had been caught, the chaser described her as a "good player" and host Bradley seemed to agree.
Another episode of the Chase will air this afternoon (April 7) on ITV and ITVX from 5.35pm. You can catch up on previous episodes of the show through streaming platform ITVX.
