Foolishness abounded on a bizarre punt during Saturday’s St. Thomas-Valparaiso game.
The silliness in question happened during the third quarter of what was a 34-7 Tommies beatdown of the Beacons.
On a fourth-and-long play deep in their own territory, Valparaiso punted the ball back to St. Thomas. The ball then seemed to disappear into the field of play and confuse both teams as to what was going on.
The ball kept rolling with both teams appearing to, for some reason, think it’s theirs to claim. It led to St. Thomas picking up the ball (that was punted to them) and tossing it around like it’s a last-ditch effort to score as the clock is winding to zero.

The ball bobbed and weaved about six times between St. Thomas players before a Valpo player almost made the special teams play of the day with what could have been a truly bonkers fumble recovery, but that would’ve made too much sense. A St. Thomas player came up with the ball and it was back to business, as usual.
Special teams can always lead to chaos, but the Jackson Pollock spattering of football nonsense that happened on this punt takes the cake for strangest sequence of the day.
