The Champions League experience Anthony Gordon dreamt of with Newcastle United comes true

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has revealed he expected to be playing Champions League football when he agreed to join the club back in January.

Gordon's name was still being chanted long after the final whistle on Sunday at Stamford Bridge after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. And now he can dream of playing for the Magpies against a Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund next season.

Speaking after the clash at Stamford Bridge - where he scored his first Toon goal - the Scouser told reporters: "These people haven't had Champions League football for so long and it couldn't happen to better people.

"I'm delighted for everyone. It is what you dream of. Champions League football is why I joined; because of these expectations."

Gordon will head away for a short break but will be back in action with England U21s at the European Championships as the Three Lions take on the Czech Republic, Israel and Germany. When the new season starts he will then go into a stiff battle for places.

With Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Alexander Isak establishing themselves as the front three, Gordon will be pushing from pre-season onwards. His battle in midfield - before new signings come in - will be just as tough with Sean Longstaff one of the players of the season and Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Joe Willock ahead of him in the engine room.
