The February 8 trade deadline is fast approaching. For the Golden State Warriors, that means their window to improve their roster and turn their season around is quickly closing. As such, the franchise is likely to be listed in multiple trade rumors in the coming weeks.
After a sluggish start to the 2023-24 season, where the Warriors sit 12th in the Western Conference, it’s understandable why so many believe the franchise needs to bring in some new talent. Given the Warrior’s lack of size, a big man or lengthy forward would be the ideal addition to the rotation.
Paul George recently discussed the logic of a trade between the Warriors and Toronto Raptors that would send Pascal Siakam to the Bay Area. He is the exact sort of player Golden State needs and would instantly add a new dimension on both sides of the court.
However, as with every trade, there are pros and cons to consider. Let’s take a look at the arguments for and against adding Siakam ahead of the trade deadline.
The case for making a move for Siakam
Siakam, 29, is an All-NBA level talent. He made the All-NBA second team in 2020 and the All-NBA third team in 2022. He was also an All-Star last season. Players of that caliber rarely become available via trade. Adding a legitimate forward with size and length would help round out the Warriors’ rotation.
Siakam would also bring some reliable scoring to the equation, as he’s averaging 22.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists on 52.6% shooting. Having another scorer who can help lighten the load on Steph Curry while easing the burden of being a secondary option for Klay Thompson would likely elevate the entire Warriors offense. Siakam is also a reliable defender and could fit into Steve Kerr‘s system rather seamlessly.
The case against making a move for Siakam
The biggest concern is his current contract situation. Siakam is in the final year of his current deal and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. There’s no guarantee he would remain with Golden State beyond the upcoming summer, which could make him a very expensive rental.
According to Marc Stein, via a recent addition to his SteinLine newsletter, Siakam favors remaining in Toronto and exploring his options in free agency. That would be a huge deterrent for the Warriors or any other team interested in making a trade for him.
The final verdict
The reward doesn’t outweigh the risk unless the Warriors can get a verbal commitment from Siakam that he would re-sign with the franchise long-term. Dunleavy Jr. would be better suited looking elsewhere for a player who can help now but will be with the team moving forward and could help connect the veteran core with the young talent that’s emerging within the rotation.
Siakam would be a great addition, but not as a rental.
