The busiest and quietest train stations in Scotland revealed

Nine Scottish train stations are visited by fewer than one person a day on average.

The latest Office for National Statistics figures also revealed that Glasgow Central was once again the busiest in Scotland, with 15.3 million entries and exits between April 2021 and March 2022.

That’s followed by Edinburgh, with 13.6 million, Glasgow Queen Street, with 8.5 million, Paisley Gilmour Street, with 2.1 million, Partick, with 1.7 million, Aberdeen with 1.5 million, and Haymarket with 1.5 million.

Scotland’s quietest station is Scotscalder in the constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

Just 116 entries and exits were made at the station in the year to March. That works out as just one person every three days on average.

Lochluichart is the next quietest station, with 130 entries and exits, followed by Kildonan (140), Beasdale (162) and Culrain (164).

Nine Scottish stations have fewer than one passenger a day on average, with Invershin (210), Altnabreac (230), Barry Links (244) and Achanalt (342) making up the rest.

Nationally, London Waterloo has regained its status as Britain’s most frequently used railway station - used by an estimated 41.4 million passengers in the 12 months to the end of March.

That total is up from 12.2 million during the previous year, but was below half the estimate of 86.9 million in 2019/20.

London Waterloo was Britain’s busiest station for 16 years, until it slipped to number four in 2020/21 as passenger numbers plummeted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The least used railway station in 2021/22 was Elton and Orston in rural Nottinghamshire, with just 40 recorded entries and exits. It is served by two East Midlands Railway trains per day between Mondays and Saturdays.

Feras Alshaker, director of planning and performance at the Office of Rail and Road, said: “It is heartening to see passengers return to travelling by rail following what was a difficult period for the industry during the pandemic, but there’s still some way to go in order for station usage figures to return to pre-pandemic levels.

“Once again it is important to thank all those in the rail industry, who continue to work hard to help people travel safely and with confidence.”
