The Brits host Mo Gilligan apologises after getting Lewis Capaldi's name wrong as viewers thought they were hearing things

Viewers watching The BRIT Awards on Saturday night thought they were hearing things when host Mo Gilligan introduced hitmaker Lewis Capaldi to the stage, and called him Sam. Mo welcomed "Sam Capaldi" to the stage, and fans asked what was going on.

Scottish singer Lewis took to the stage to sing his ballad Forget Me as viewers flocked to Twitter. @supersonicsaz1 remarked: "Poor Lewis being called Sam Capaldi that could throw you right off your performance."

@diannemi asked: "Whos Sam Capaldi?" And @dominic4346 also wondered: "Who is Sam Capaldi?" @FLOSDIVINE gasped: "Mo did not just say sam capaldi."

@highfieldreb exclaimed: "Sam Capaldi!!!!!!! Omg no Mo." And @ismiseciara joked: "#samcapaldi is the PC version of @LewisCapaldi."

Mo apologised (ITV)

After Lewis' performance Mo said: "Give it up for Lewis Capaldi." And he confirmed his slip-up, saying: "I do apologise I did call him Sam." Jokingly blaming the drinks being served at the awards, he said: "They're not playing around."

Viewers wondered if he had mixed his name with fellow Brits performer Sam Smith. @imshanereaction quipped: "Sam Smith and Lewis Capaldi wondering which one of them is supposed to go on stage."

@sammocoo said: "'Sam Capaldi'……the Lewis Capaldi Sam Smith hybrid that nobody asked for. Well done Mo." And @MattWoodsOrg joked: "Sam Capaldi is great. Looking forward to Lewis Smith later."
