The Boys season 5 features the "craziest line" the writers could think of, but someone already beat them to it in real life

Antony Starr as Homelander in The Boys season 5.

The Boys season 5 will be bringing the Prime Video superhero series to an end, and we're expecting some typically outlandish storylines. However, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has revealed that real life kept outpacing them in the writers' room.

"A lot of things that were far-fetched for us, you know that were like, 'That's crazy,' have come to pass in a way that's really, really fucking troubling," he explained to TV Guide. "There's a line – I won't give it away. There's a line in episode 7 that Homelander says that was the craziest line we could think of and it's already happened."

The final season was written back in 2024 so there may be a fair amount of crossover between real life and the superhero show, according to the showrunner. Details on what exactly will happen have been kept under lock and key but we have some ideas about what's going to go down based on what we've seen in The Boys season 5 trailers so far.

The main crux of the season seems to be the Boys aiming to stop Homelander in his mission to find the original form of Compound V in order to become immortal. It won't be easy, though, with Soldier Boy back, Billy Butcher's terminal sentence on the horizon, and Homelander eyeing up the Oval Office.

It all kicks off on April 8 with a double episode premiere before airing weekly up until the series finale on May 20. For what else to watch, check out our guides to all the new TV shows on the way in 2026 and beyond, as well as our selection of the best Amazon Prime shows to stream now.
