Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, said that he was contacted by the then-president Donald Trump when they were both hospitalised for Covid-19 last year.

And let’s just say it was quite the bizarre check-in message.

According to an excerpt of Christie’s book quoted by The New York Times, a worried Trump asked Christie “Are you going to say you got it from me?”

Trump got Covid-19 after numerous engagements with crowds of people, many without face-masks, and was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland in October 2020.

Several people close to him at that time also contracted the virus, including Christie who ended up in a New Jersey hospital a day after Trump.

Christie spent a week in the ICU and came out to say that he regretted not wearing a mask, which Trump and people around him frequently did not. Through his experience, he urged Americans to “wear a mask.”

“Today, I think about how wrong it is to let mask-wearing divide us, especially as we now know you’re twice as likely to get Covid-19 if you don’t wear a mask. Because if you don’t do the right thing, we could all end up on the wrong side of history. Please wear a mask,” Christie said in a Covid-19 ad.

Christie also addressed Trump’s false claims and conspiracies about the 2020 election.

“An election for president was held on November 3, 2020,” Christie writes. “Joe Biden won. Donald Trump did not.”

He also said that there are consequences to the words that Trump used “and that those consequences at times can be stuff that you may not even be able to anticipate.”

Elsewhere, Christie told Trump and the party to leave the conspiracy theories behind them.

“No matter where you stand on that issue, no matter where you stand, it is over,” he said, in part according to The Hill.

Christie’s upcoming novel Republican Rescue: Saving the Party From Truth Deniers, Conspiracy Theorists, and the Dangerous Policies of Joe Biden is set to be released on November 16.
