The Best Stems to Leave Standing for Native Bees

native bee nesting habitat
Hollow and pithy stems from plants such as bee balm, sunflowers, raspberry canes, and elderberry can provide nesting sites for native bees. Leaving selected stems standing and pruning them at appropriate times helps protect developing pollinators. Gino Tuesta/Shutterstock

Before you cut every dead flower stalk down to the ground this fall, consider what’s hiding inside those dried stems.
