One Marvel fan thinks the Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene is secretly hinting at another Spider-Man returning.
Spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene is a curious one. At face value, it appears to be keeping tabs on Tom Holland's Spidey as his Spider-Tracker icon heads out of New York and into the far reaches of outer space.
But what if it's another Spider-Man that we're looking at? After all, there is static interference and glitches galore before the screen pans out to the cosmos.
So, is this another universe? A Spider-Man lost in space? The fittingly-named Marvel Insights on Twitter has, well, some insights that line up with our own Big Ideas on how Brand New Day drew to a close.
The user posits that we're definitely on the same Earth – no multiverse shenanigans here – but there are key details fans are missing. Namely, Peter 1 (AKA Tom Holland's Spider-Man) is still being tracked on Earth and never disappears – instead, another Spider-Man is being tracked.
As the theory goes, we're actually looking at Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, who has survived the collapse of his own universe and has somehow escaped into the Sacred Timeline once more.
There have long been rumors that Maguire, who isn't yet attached to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, would appear in its opening moments in one of three universes that are colliding. From there, the smart money is on Sam Raimi's Spidey swinging his way out of a dying reality and into the events of either Doomsday or Secret Wars as Doctor Doom gets set to conquer all.
Honestly, I'm pretty sold on it myself. I think it's at least some sort of set up for Avengers: Secret Wars rather than Doomsday. My first thought was that Tom Holland's Peter Parker had been transported into Battleworld, a manufactured reality from the comics that is an amalgamation of different locations, heroes, and villains. But I like the idea that Tobey Maguire is entering Earth-616 too. At the very least, it's another exciting example of the multiverse throwing up all sorts of unexpected possibilities.
