The best running routes in Glasgow you need to take advantage of this summer

Whilst it's sunny outside, many of us will be wanting to make the most of it by heading to the nearest park and soaking up the sun.

However, many others will want to get out and about and go for a run to keep themselves fit and active.

There are multiple places that you can head to whether it's a quick run around your estate, a run around your local park or driving out a bit further out and enjoying the outdoors.

So if you'd rather get on your feet and enjoy the sun, and maybe do a bit of sunbathing later, then here are some places you should consider whilst putting on your running shoes.

Where are the best places to run in Glasgow?

Glasgow parks - including Pollok, Alexandra and Queen's Park - to name a few

Glasgow parks are often overlooked as a place to put your running shoes on with people often looking at them as a place to have a walk around whether it's solo, with others or to get your dog out and about.

But they can be great for a run whether you want a quick 20 minutes or something a little longer. And there's bound to be places nearby you can grab a drink or a post protein smoothie (or caffeine) afterwards to keep you cool on a warm day.

As well as the ample green spaces we have here, it is worth noting that many local parks are home to Parkrun - a free group 5k held every Saturday morning.

Parks taking part in ParkRun:

  • Tollcross Park
  • Pollok Park
  • Queen's Park
  • Victoria Park
  • Ruchhill Park
  • Springburn Park
  • Drumpchapel Park

Glasgow Stadium Tour

According to Glasgowrunningroutes, you can pass all of the following during the 22.1 mile run which has an elevation of 1227 feet and a mix of flat, uphill and downhill.

Where you will pass on the run:

  • Bellahouston Park
  • Celtic Park
  • Firhill
  • Hampden
  • Ibrox
  • Kings Park
  • Linn Park
  • North
  • Pollok Park
  • Science Centre

They say: "Start at the Botanics, run up Queen Margaret Drive and head down Maryhill Road with a wee detour to tick off Firhill, home of Kingsley and Partick Thistle. Then carry on towards town, up Sauchiehall Street, Cathedral Street past the University of Strathclyde and take in the beauty of Glasgow Cathedral.

"Onto Duke Street, then Clyde Gateway towards Dalmarnock where you’ll pass Celtic Park and the Emirates Arena which hosts the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Next, you head over the River Clyde to Rutherglen then Toryglen, turning left up Aikenhead Road with Hampden on your right hand side."

You can see the full route here.

The Clyde Walkway

The Clyde Walkway is around 40 miles (65 km) long, running between Partick and New Lanark in South Lanarkshire. There are several routes you can take making for a nice run in the sun.

Clyde Walkway routes:

Necropolis and Glasgow Green

Try following a previous Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run Half Marathon and 10k route.

Start in George Square before heading east along Ingram Street, through the Merchant City onto High Street. From there head up to the Cathedral district and onto a circuit of the city’s Necropolis before heading back down to Glasgow Green.

West Highland Way and Mugdock Country Park

For trail runners the West Highland Way is a great escape to get out of the city. Start where the trail begins near to Milngavie train station before following the paths out to Mugdock Country Park. This route will test even the most avid runners but it’s worth it for the views and coffee and cake at Stables Café in the park.
