The Best Indie Sports Games of 2025

Each year, the world of sports video games is dominated by massive budget releases, but 2025 once again proved that many inventive and earnest experiences come from the indie scene. It also just so happens that a lot of these indie gems incorporate elements from sports.

From satisfying skateboarding to exhilarating downhill racing, and a personal story centered around the joy of football, these games stand out as different. While annual sports sims focus on competition, these games focus on creativity, passion, and unique gameplay.

Skate Story

Skate Story is less of a standard skateboarding simulator and more of a voyage through a neon-lit, frail underworld. You take on the role of a demon built of pain and glass, who has to literally skate to the Moon to carry out a deal with the devil and attain his freedom.

This high-concept story instantly sets it apart, mainlining a deep sense of purpose and melancholy into every trick. But the fun truly lies in the game’s control scheme, focusing on accurate and deliberate inputs, helped by sleek animations

Skate Story is a game of rhythm and flow, awarding mastery over speed, as your character’s fragility is a constant worry. This means that any major crash not only loses you points but also highlights your vulnerable state.

The artistic visuals, bathed in moody lighting, create a distinct atmosphere, proving that skateboarding is not just about high scores but also about soul-searching.

Wheel World

From the developers of the cult classic Nidhogg, Wheel World is a luminous, dazzling, open-world adventure racing game that captures the true freedom of cycling culture. You step into the shoes of Kat, a cyclist assigned by ancient cycling spirits to explore the world and accumulate legendary bicycle parts to save the universe.

It is a relaxed and often goofy experience set in a spirited world where bikes are king. The gameplay focuses on exploration, performing daring tricks to earn ‘Rep,’ and participating in races against quirky rivals.

Although the racing may not be competitive enough, the real draw is the reflective, fluid experience of cycling through distinct, aesthetic biomes, like vineyards and autumnal coasts. In addition to that, the extensive bike customisation lets you fine-tune your bicycle according to different terrains.

Descenders Next

Descenders Next

Continuing the legacy of the highly successful and critically acclaimed downhill biking title, Descenders Next extends the intense sports experience into a multisports behemoth. The developer RageSquid has decided to go beyond mountain biking, bringing snowboarding and mountainboarding right at launch.

To ensure that this is the only extreme sports game you’ll ever need, this game focuses on refining the fluidity and unique feel of each sport. Players must understand and learn completely different physics and control schemes for the best performance.

Importantly, the ‘Next’ iteration comes with fully online co-op and versus multiplayer, allowing you to shred the slopes together with your friends. Combined with a massive extension in customisation options, from gear and boards to a full rep system.

Descenders Next is a high-octane experience as you can ride through endless, tight off-piste mountains, all while listening to the aggressive drum and bass soundtrack by Monstercat.

Formula Legends

Formula Legends is an innovative love letter spanning over decades. It uses the open-wheel motosport as a foundation for the unique, art-deco-inspired visual style. Developed by 3DClouds, this game allows you to jump into a fictional universe that covers the six decades of Formula racing, from the 1960s to modern day.

The main appeal of this racer is its ‘Story Mode,’ which leads you through key areas, exhibiting the evolution of the cars and tracks. All minor changes and enhancements, like the look of the chassis, the appearance of safety features, and trackside environments, are perfectly captured.

While the “sim-cade” handling model has been said to be inconsistent, the diverse eras and proper attention to detail make Formula Legends engaging and different from any other motosport game.

Despelote

Despelote focuses less on competition and more on nostalgia, culture, and the love that surrounds football. This is a first-person exploration game with Ecuador as the setting. It showcases the atmosphere and thrill during the country’s unforgettable qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

You experience this historic moment through the eyes of an eight-year old, Julián Cordero, wandering the streets with a football. The gameplay is unlike any other football game, concentrating on storytelling and utilising the ball as the core tool for interaction.

However, controls are intentionally designed to feel slightly inconsistent, reproducing the casual and clumsy joy of a child’s play. It involves exploring the small, open environments, like parks and schoolyards, allowing you to eavesdrop on specific conversations, witnessing people’s excitement for the World Cup.

The idea is to simply let you experience the world as a child once again, reliving all the good times you had, creating playful memories in a world where football is the main focus.
