The beautiful woodland walk in the Peak District with tumbling waterfalls

When you think of the Peak District, impressive hills and dramatic crags probably spring to mind. Yet it also has its fair share of beautiful woodland walks.

One which is particularly magical is Padley Gorge, a mesmerising stretch of ancient oak and birch woodland in a deep valley. It’s a place where you’ll find twisted tree branches, tumbling waterfalls and winding streams.

This gorgeous wooded valley is located in the eastern part of the National Park and is easily reached from Grindleford train station, just an hour away from Manchester. Padley Gorge has even been named one of the most Instagrammable places in the UK so it’s definitely worth a visit.

A designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, Padley Gorge is a haven for wildlife and a popular destination for photographers, especially in the autumn when the leaves change. Part of a wider area known as Yarncliff Wood, the gorge offers something a bit different from other popular locations in the Peaks, such as Mam Tor and Ladybower Reservoir.

It’s also a place which children will love with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, as well as small waterfalls and twisted tree routes. There’s a magical atmosphere created by the woodland which is sure to spark the imagination.

There are various walks you can take along Padley Gorge, depending on whether you fancy a short stroll or something a little longer. Grindleford station makes a great starting point, and there’s also a cafe, handy for a refreshing drink and a snack. If you’re lucky you’ll there’s sometimes an ice cream van at the far end of the gorge, near to the Longshaw Estate.

Starting at the station you can follow the trail through Padley Gorge which stretches for around 1.5 miles. For a 3 mile walk you can return the same way, enjoying the calmness of the woods.

For a longer walk carry on into the Longshaw Estate where the shady woods meet open moorland. Alternatively you can head towards Owler Tor and Surprise View after completing the walk through Padley Gorge.
