'The Batman Part 2' Release Date, Plot, Cast, and Villains for the Matt Reeves Movie Sequel

Warner Bros.

In February 2020, we first saw Robert Pattinson don the cape and the cowl for Matt Reeves’ younger, grungier take on the Caped Crusader in The Batman. Little did we know, the movie wouldn’t reach theaters until March 2022. Years later, the world of The Batman is expanding with The Penguin, but The Batman 2 is still a distant dream.

How much longer will fans have to wait? Who will Battinson face off against? Will we ever see Barry Keoghan’s Joker again? Here’s everything you need to know about The Batman Part 2, from the release date to the plot to what is ahead for Reeve’s greater Batman-verse.

Will there be a The Batman 2? Is it confirmed?

Yes! Director Matt Reeves announced The Batman’s sequel, officially titled The Batman Part II, was in the works in April 2022 at CinemaCon. However, it’s still a while off, and two years after that announcement, filming hasn’t even begun.

When is The Batman 2 release date?

Robert Pattinson may look a little older in The Batman Part II thanks to filming and release delays. | Warner Bros.

The Batman was originally due for a June 2021 release date but was delayed twice before ultimately landing in March 2022. Unfortunately, it looks like the sequel is following the same pattern. The Batman Part 2 will premiere in theaters on October 2, 2026, almost a year to the day later than its original release date of October 3, 2025. Hopefully, it will avoid a second delay, but with production not starting until April 2025, a lot can still go wrong to necessitate an even later date.

Thankfully, you can check out The Batman and The Penguin on Max while you wait.

Is there a The Batman 2 trailer?

Considering nothing has been filmed for the sequel, there’s no trailer just yet — with the existing schedule, we may not get a trailer until well into 2025. However, you can check out the trailer for the first movie above.

What is The Batman 2 plot about?

Could Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon tie his own spinoff to The Batman 2? | Warner Bros.

The Batman 2 will probably be a traditional sequel to The Batman, given how the first film follows the early days of Bruce Wayne’s vigilante career. But we do have one big clue as to what will happen in the plot. Matt Reeves told Forbes he plans to give The Penguin a moment in his spinoff show that will echo one in The Batman and lead directly into the sequel.

“At the end of The Batman, you see him looking out over the city — and so, I said that’s where it should start and we then should see that kind of ascent and then we need it [to] get him to this place, where he ... is ready to join the [Part II] film.”

If The Penguin truly leads to the events of The Batman Part II, then the last episodes of the series will contain plenty of clues to fuel speculation while we wait the two years for the movie.

What villains will be in The Batman 2?

While we only know for sure that Colin Farrell’s Penguin will return in the sequel, there’s still the tease of Barry Keoghan’s Joker that needs to be addressed. But those loose threads haven’t deterred Matt Reeves from teasing other ideas, like a “grounded” Mr. Freeze or The Court of Owls. There’s a whole Rogue’s Gallery to pull from and plenty of opportunities to give them Reeves’ trademark dark twist.

Who’s in The Batman Part 2’s cast?

We can safely assume that Robert Pattinson will return as Batman, and Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon is also a safe bet. It also seems likely that Colin Farrel will at least play a small role as the Penguin given his current status as the star of The Batman’s first spinoff show. And don’t forget Andy Serkis as Alfred or Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.

For the villains, both Keoghan’s Joker and Paul Dano’s Riddler may return, but we’re expecting a new supervillain to be the focus of The Batman Part 2.

Will There Be A The Batman 3?

From the beginning, Reeves’ take on Batman was meant to be a trilogy. With Part II on the way, Part III feels like a foregone conclusion. However, considering the time it’s taken to get these two off the ground, we may not see The Batman Part III until 2030.
