The bamboo mattress I rely on for cool, comfortable sleep in a heatwave

I tested the Panda London hybrid bamboo mattress pro during the peak of summer - (Mollie Davies/The Standard)

Heatwaves go hand in hand with bad sleep. Most UK houses aren’t built for rising temperatures – and while there are plenty of ways to take the edge off (air con units, handheld fans, cooling mists), staying comfortable at night is often the hardest part.

Summer 2026 has already broken records, but there could be even hotter summers and milder winters on the horizon. The last thing you want is to be running on empty after a string of sleepless, sweaty nights.

Enter Panda London’s hybrid mattress pro – a bamboo mattress that marries comfort with exceptional support, and never fails to keep me cool during waves of soaring temperatures. Crafted from natural and recycled materials, the sustainable mattress features a dual layer of orthopaedic-grade memory foam.

If keeping cool at night is at the top of your wish list, keep reading for my tried and tested run-down on Panda London’s hybrid bamboo mattress pro.

How I tested

Sleeping each night on the Panda mattress, I considered whether the bamboo design felt naturally hypoallergenic, was great at regulating body temperature – whether you’re a hot or cold sleeper – and if it was gentle on sensitive skin. Bamboo can also resist odours, so your bed will always look, feel and smell fresh – I noted whether this was the case.

What we love: The best of both worlds for couples with different preferences, balancing soft cushioning with firmer support. Breathable and temperature-regulating, with pocket springs providing responsive support without that sinking-in feeling. I also love the excellent motion isolation and washable cover – particularly useful for hot sleepers and restless partners.

Take note: This is a layered, performance-focused mattress with a softer feel than some traditional spring mattresses, so it may not suit those who prefer an especially firm sleep surface. The removable cover is machine washable, and the mattress can be steam cleaned, but its generous construction means it may take a little time to fully expand after unboxing.

The Panda London brand has built its reputation around bamboo-based sleep essentials – a natural material that is extremely soft, antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Bamboo is highly breathable, so you’ll keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The same technology that’s used in Panda London’s towels and bed linens is also used in the brand’s mattresses. So, when I opened up my new mattress last summer, I could barely wait for it to expand before jumping on top of it – knowing I’d have a fantastic night’s sleep.

The hybrid mattress pro leans into a layered and performance-driven design, combining pressure-relieving foam with a responsive spring base. Up to 1,500 pocket springs work independently to support your body, while multiple foam layers add additional cushioning.

I tend to favour a softer mattress, while my partner prefers something firmer, and this strikes a sweet spot for both of us. It avoids that claustrophobic sinking sensation some memory foam mattresses have, and instead, you feel gently supported, almost like you’re resting on top rather than being enveloped. Motion isolation is another plus for me – if you’re sharing with a restless sleeper, their movements are unlikely to disturb you.

The mattress’ open-cell technology helps to boost airflow, while the bamboo-infused foam has natural antibacterial properties to keep moisture and odours at bay. After particularly warm nights, the removable cover can be popped in the wash, and the mattress itself is safe to steam clean.

Restless, clammy nights are no longer – and Panda’s hybrid pro mattress is among the best investments I’ve made for warm weather.
