The average salary of workers in hotels in Ireland revealed - from executive chefs to bar staff

Irish recruitment firm Excel recruitment have published their 2023 average salary guide which reveals the average salaries paid to workers in hotels and catering businesses.

Excel Recruitment has specialised in the retail, hospitality, healthcare, industrial and administrative sectors since 2002.

The guide reveals the expected trends and salaries expected this year across the hospitality sector.

Excel found that 60pc of people claim salary to be the most important consideration for a job.

The key takeaway from the Excel Recruitment Employee Feedback Survey shows that businesses have no choice but to offer higher salaries just to be considered by applicants.

Employers are already struggling with recruitment and the vast majority of jobs boards applications are coming from jobseekers outside EU with “no hope” of securing a visa”.

The average salary of a Chef de Partie in Ireland is expected to reach €40K this year, while Executive Chefs can anticipate a salary of anywhere between €75,000 - €90,000.

In hotels, a general manager can expect to earn around €90,000, while a deputy general manager is on around €65,000.

A restaurant manager and bar manager in a hotel earn around €47,000 each while general bar staff are on around €30,000.

Receptionists in hotels earn around €32,000 per year while their managers or supervisors earn around €3,000 more.

Shane McLave, Managing Director of Excel Recruitment explains:

“Long before Covid-19 crippled its sector, the Hotel and Catering industry was struggling to attract chefs and industry professionals, mainly due to the low salaries and physical exertion required in many of the roles.

“To put it simply, people did not want to enter an industry that is so hands-on and physical while receiving a relatively low salary in comparison to other, similar laborious sectors”

Experts at Excel Recruitment report that the Covid-19 pandemic led to a huge volume of staff leaving the sector entirely to embark on new careers, bringing the hotel and catering industry to its knees.

Excel Recruitment reports that some of the clients they work with have been trialling a four-day workweek in a bid to compete for job applicants.

Excel’s report notes that some clients could typically receive 200 applications for a job posting.

However, as with one of its clients, 189 of those were from people outside the EU. You can see the average salaries of hotels and catering staff in Ireland below:
