The Arsene Wenger record Mikel Arteta could break this season amid Arsenal's win over Liverpool

Arsenal made it eight wins from nine in the Premier League on Sunday as they defeated Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium. The victory means that the Gunners stay top of the table for another week despite being temporarily displaced on Saturday afternoon by Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring on the day by finding the back of the net in just 58 seconds. Liverpool levelled proceedings through Darwin Nunez after 34 minutes but Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead for a second time on the stroke of half-time.

Liverpool restored parity again on 53 minutes as Roberto Firmino scored his 10th goal against the Gunners in just 17 appearances. Arsenal were awarded a penalty 15 minutes from time thanks to a challenge from Thiago Alcantara on Gabriel Jesus.

Saka had to wait more than two minutes to take the spot-kick after a disagreement between Arsenal and Liverpool players broke out in the away team's area. Despite the pressure, the Englishman made no mistake from 12 yards as he slotted his attempt past Alisson Becker, who guessed the right way but couldn't prevent the ball from ending up in the bottom corner.

Interestingly, the last club to start a Premier League season with eight wins from their first nine games and not win the title were Arsenal back in 2007-08. That means Mikel Arteta's team have the chance to break an unfortunate record held by one of Arsene Wenger's squads.

Whilst many consider City to be favourites for the title, Gunners fans are desperate to become champions of England once more having not won the competition since 2004. They may have to wait until a proper title charge is feasible, but Arteta has got his side believing they can win every game. Let's wait to see what happens in the coming months.
