ARIA Awards season is officially upon us (Oscar, who?), with the full list of Aussie musicians vying for the iconic and very pointy trophy being revealed.
The nominees for the 2024 ARIA Awards were announced in a YouTube livestream on Thursday morning, with Royel Otis leading the pack and collecting a whopping total of eight nominations.
The Sydney duo — who were inescapable for the better part of this year thanks to their viral cover of “Murder on The Dance Floor” — received nods in major categories like Album of the Year and Best Rock Album (for their debut project PRATTS & PAIN), as well as Best Group.
Most notably, that very cover (you know, the one that had us collectively swooning), was also nominated for Song Of The Year, marking the first time a Like A Version cover has ever been in contention for an ARIA Award.
Royel Otis are joined in the Album of The Year category by fellow nominees Amy Shark (for Sunday Sadness), feeler of the rush Troye Sivan (for Something To Give Each Other), Angie McMahon (for Light, Dark, Light Again) and THEE Kylie Minogue (for Tension).
Coasting off that sweet “Padam” buzz, Ms. Minogue was among the most-nominated artists this year, receiving five nods including for Best Pop Release and Best Solo Artist.
The latter category also includes shouts for Sivan, Tones And I, Tkay Maidza, and Dom Dolla, while the Best Group category names Royel, Hiatus Kaiyote, and RÜFÜS DU SOL, among others.
Dom Dolla had a particularly good run, too, picking up six nominations across categories like Best Dance / Electronic Release for “Saving Up” — where he sits alongside Fisher and Confidence Man — and Song of The Year.
That category is perhaps the most competitive, with Sivan’s “Got Me Started” going up against “Murder On The Dance Floor”, “Tension” and G Flip’s “The Worst Person Alive”, among others.
Outside of those major categories, specific genres got their shout with Jessica Mauboy, ONEFOUR and Casey Barnes named in the Best Pop, Best Hip Hop/Rap, and Best Country categories, respectively.
For their part, Angus & Julia Stone got a nod for Best Adult Contemporary Album, while Dune Rats and Teenage Jones will vie for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album.
On the global front, brat summer continues its reign in the southern hemisphere with Charli XCX named alongside ARIA-ana Grande (see what I did there?), Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Olivia Rodrigo for Most Popular International Artist. The pop girls stay winning.
Such a bustling and starry list of nominees is a testament to the thriving state of Aussie music throughout 2024, but with only so many wins to be awarded, I propose a Cady from Mean Girls moment where we break that pointy trophy into morsels for everyone to share.
This year’s ARIA Awards ceremony will be held at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on November 20, and will be broadcast the same day on Stan. Peep the full list of nominees in major categories below.
